Mortimer & Randolph $1 Gaffe
The new "Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe" of the week award is awarded to a player who's single play (or gaffe) stood out amoungst all the games and is recoginized for all the wrong reasons with a $1.00 scratch ticket.

Week #15
Gino Tammaro

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Gino Tammaro of Last Call.

For the second consecutive week a second member of the Paisano Brotherhood makes this infamous list.

With his team surprisingly leading the Gold Miners team, Gino had a chance to extend the lead and put even more pressure on their opponent.

In the second period, Gino used his explosive speed to get around the defense on the right wing, faking the shot and deking the goalie, staring at a wide-open net, only to roof his shot not into the top corner but high over the net.

Immediately after that miss, Gino was seen shaking his head in embarrassment, with his head down, heading to his bench.

Week #14
Angelo De Luca

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Angelo De Luca of Last Call.

We thought we had seen the last of the infamous “Otak” player (Angelo’s inner nemesis) forever in the Over-30 league, but he somehow made an unexpected appearance this week.

During a 4-on-4 sequence in the first period, Angelo had the ball on his stick looking at a prime scoring opportunity, when suddenly a transformation took place as Otak took over, causing Angelo to fan on his shot and miss the ball completely.

Angelo De Luca

Week #13
Mike Duggan

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Mike Duggan of ReUnited.

Mike had a hard time finding his footing falling down in the corner by Scoreboard Pub. This was good enough for taking home the Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe award this week.

Mike Duggan

Week #12
Tony Bono

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Tony Bono of Loose Cannons.

With his team playing from behind most of the game and trailing by a goal, in the third period, Tony had a wide-open net with the ball on his stick to the right of the crease, and proceeded to miss the net with a sure goal.

Tony’s shot missed by about four feet short side, hitting the boards behind the net.

How wide open was the net, and how badly did Tony miss?  Even blind Steve could have scored that goal.

Tony Bono

Week #11
Ray Dow

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Ray Dow of Omerta.

In a hilarious pre game video, Ray knows that Dominic Defrancisco does not think highly of LeBron James.  Yet, there is Dominic wearing the same type of headband as Lebron and even cutting his hair.  In fact, there is a new nickname floating out there for Dominic, calling him “LeDom.”

So, what does Ray do before their recent game?  He is seen talking to Dominic, then pulls out a red headband with the name LeDom on it, then goes over to the boards, grabs some baby powder and tosses it into the air.

An instant classic moment.  Thanks for the laugh Ray.

Ray Dow

Week #10
Angelo De Luca

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Angelo De Luca of Last Call.

In a back-and-forth up tempo start in a scoreless game, Angelo had the chance to score the game’s first goal.

Positioning himself in the high slot as Gino Tammaro had the ball deep in the corner, the pass was perfect from Gino right onto the blade of Angelo’s stick.

At that moment, Angelo turned into (not Kato) but Otek and whiffed on his shot attempt, never even getting a shot off.

If his son Max was there, he surely would have said “he’s not my dad, I don’t know who he is.”

Angelo De Luca

Week #9
Ron Aquino

The winner of the 2/26/22 Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Ron Aquino of Last Call.

No one will confuse Ron for being a skilled playmaker while on the rink.  But everyone expects Ron to make even the simplest of hockey plays.

While standing at the center blue line, Ron went to make a pass to a team mate and ended up tripping over his own feet and falling down on the rink.

We are told that Ron did somewhat get the ball to his team mate, got back up and looked around to see if anyone noticed his “blind Steve” moment.  Sorry Ron, yes we did!

Ron Aquino

Week #8
Bill Abcunas

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is our own League Director himself Bill Abcunas.

During the filming of the Bob O’Halloran WCVB(Channel5) segment…players were taking turns doing breakaways on Scotty Rosato. During one of the attempts.. Billy tried a move on Scotty.. only to find himself face down in the bottom of a faceoff circle.

Bill almost turned a “Sports” news piece into and “9-1-1” piece.., Billy will argue that he made the goal on Scotty.., but just like saying Punxsutawney Phil can see his shadow.., no one saw the goal (except for him).

Bill Abcunas

Week #7
Naz

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Naz.

Previously in the winter 2021 season, during week 9, we had a gaffe play by the referee (hello Ric Aylwin falling down on a faceoff).  It was only a matter of time before we had another one this season.

With the last game in running time and the outcome already determined, Naz accidentally accounted for the final score.

With Last Call on a Power Play, Pic had the ball in his zone on the left wing breaking out of his zone, looking at a breakaway.

Instead of getting out of the way, Naz stood his ground, as Gino forced Pic to the boards, resulting in the ball hitting Naz in the foot, and as Naz tried getting out of the way, he accidentally kicked the ball right to Gino’s stick and Gino proceeded to score a goal.

Nice assist Naz; too bad we can’t give you credit for it!

Michael Naczas

Week #6
Jeff Deharo

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Jeff Deharo of Gold Miners.

Early in a scoreless game, a shot by Omerta’s defenseman at the point was stopped by Jeff, and on the ensuing scramble out front while down on the rink, his glove accidentally pushed the ball right onto the stick of the opposing player who proceeded to score into an open net.  Oops.

Jeff did not want his photo taken

Week #5
Gary Goodwin

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Gary Goodwin of Gold Miners.

We all know that Gary has earned the nickname of “Stonehands” for his ability to turn prime scoring chances into an adventure and missed opportunities.

You can now add a new nickname of “happy feet” to his resume.  Standing all alone in front of the net with no defenseman anywhere in sight, the ball was right there at the top of the crease when Gary tried to position himself to get a shot off.

Instead, Gary stumbled and bumbled his way to falling backwards, down on his backside, never even getting a shot off.

Gary Goodwin

Week #4
Ed Nigro

The winner of the 2/27/22 Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Ed Nigro of Omerta.

Being the oldest tenured player in the Over-30 league is a testament to Ed’s longevity of keeping in shape and keeping his playing skills sharp.

Something must have happened while out on IR for three weeks to Ed’s hand-eye coordination skills as he was set up at the point for a wide-open slapshot with no one around him, only to end up topping the ball and see it never move in front of him.

By the way Ed, your form in taking that slapshot was spot on and you get a 10 for that.  The actual shot?  We are giving you a minus -10.

Ed Nigro

Week #3
Mike Surette

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Mike Surette of ReUnited.

In a tie game early in the third period, Mike unleashed one of his hard snapshots down near his own net.  Most players try to get out of the way of Mike’s shot.

Unfortunately for big Mike, his shot ended up hitting Gary Goodwin in the foot and ricochet into Mike’s own net.

Sorry Mike but you don’t get credit for your first goal scored of the season.

At least for one play Mike you didn’t have Matty I yelling at you for another one of your icing plays.

Mike Surette

Week #2
Steve Witkus

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Steve Witkus of Gold Miners.

It just goes to show you that even all-time great icons of the league are subject to an occasional gaffe.

During his game, Steve had the ball at the point and wound up for a slap shot.  Maybe it is because he has been not playing for years, or maybe just because he is older, Steve came down and topped his shot, then proceeded to fall forward onto the rink.  We think officially that Steve went further than his actual shot!

Thanks, Steve, for making all the blue-collar grunts of the league feel better about themselves, seeing a legend mimic what they do on a regular basis.

Steve Witkus

Week #1
Gary Goodwin

The winner of the weekly Mortimer and Randolph Gaffe of the week award is Gary Goodwin of Gold Miners.

Gary finds himself alone in front of the net with Dave Giusti down and out on the floor with a wide-open net Gary shoots the ball into the scoreboard.

A few lucky fans had a souvenir but what comes next was (Boo’s and Gaaaary) rain down from the scoreboard pub.

With a nickname of stone hands what would you expect.

Gary Goodwin
