Award Winner - Spring 2009

Now playing in his 36th season, Ed is the king when it comes to championship jackets won.  Ed has collected a total of 9 championships.  Unlike career stats leader Ray Nickerson, Ed Nigro knows that the measure of one’s greatness in the Over-30 league is not in the number of career points and assists you accumulate.  Rather, it is measured in the number of jackets you have won.

Based on his unparalleled success in the league, Ed has been considering negotiating out a deal with the league director to take under his wing all those “cursed” players still vying for their first-ever jacket.  Sort of like letting his good fortune rubs off on those unfortunate few.  Rumor has it that next season; Ed will come back out of captaincy retirement and personally request that both Dave Hill and Gary Goodwin be assigned to his team so that he can go down in league history as the only captain to break that modern day curse.  The Red Sox had Curt Schilling; the Over-30 league has Ed Nigro.

By winning 4 out of the last 7 Championship jackets, Ed can certainly lay claim to being one of the few elite Over-30 player’s of the moment that all players want to be a part of.

Rumors & Facts;

  • Playing for 36 seasons and with so many different players and personalities, Ed ripped out half his hair to earn those jackets, and is still willing to give the rest of it for Dave Hill and Gary Goodwin jackets.
  • Often wears a headband under his helmet because the only helmet that was on sale was two sizes to big… but after winning 9-championships, his head eventually grew into the helmet.
  • Even though Ed has won 9 championships, has his choice of 9 jackets to wear, has his name etched on the league trophy in 9 different places, and has had his name featured on 9 different PUTA Forum championship story articles, his daughter Rachel still doesn’t believe him that he is a 9-time champion.
  • Survived a full year as captain on the same team as Matt Iannello and still has the many bottles of aspirin in his hockey bag from all those headaches he endured.
  • First captain to win a jacket for a former “cursed” player in Mike Fleming.
  • Solid third-ranked defenseman (or is it now a 4th-ranked one) that has developed more stick handling into his game and even rushes up with the attack to crash the net (both the opponents and his own).
