Truth... Lies... Facts... and Over-30 Fiction

One and Done!

Mike Luise is not waiting around for the last week or even the last 27-seconds of the season (like Tony Bono did) to complete his 6-goal season challenge.

Mike shut his critics up early and needed only 40-seconds into the first shift of the game when he beat Dave Giusti for his 6th goal of the season.

Sorry Scotty Rosato… you going to have to wait until next spring to see if either Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow or if George Medeiros score 7-goals as either of those two can decide if it’s going to be an early spring or 6-more weeks of wearing a pink warm up shirt.

Finally Happened

Welcome to the Over-30 League and welcome to the Forum Eddie Chin… it finally happened Week #13 (4:56) into the first period…, what happened you ask?

This video can explain it all;

That’s right…, Eddie Chin finally took a ball off the chin, and we finally got to use the previous clip that we’ve been saving since Week #2.

Taking the ball off the chin didn’t affect Eddie too much as he went on to record his first assist of his Over-30 Hockey League career with just 12-seconds to play in the 1st to make the game 2-1.

Welcome to the league "Chin-Ball Boy..., Ball-Chin Boy..., or Chin-Balls”  - you earned this one.

Smoked

Poor Dave Costa…, the league’s marquee defenseman and the draft-master general was absolutely smoked last week…, and not once but twice.

Definition of smoked: Slow cooking - 250 Degrees for 8-hours or a slow player like Pat Pirone making a move on the potential Team Portugal Defenseman and then going in on a breakaway (missing his first attempt) and then burying his own rebound while sliding on his knees.

Slow Roasted

First, he was smoked…, and then he got slow roasted less than 6-minutes later.  It wasn’t a fun week to be Dave Costa as he quickly bailed out of Hockeytown after his game.  Dave wasn’t sticking around for Jay Carrien’s “Key chokes of the game.”

Down 2-1 and on a Sandbaggers powerplay…, Gino Tammaro roasted Dave along the penalty boxes and went in one-on-one against his goaltender Dave Giusti and beat him for a short-handed goal.

Come to think of it…, it wasn’t a good week to be Dave Giusti either.  He was the goalie of record for Mike Luise’s challenge beating goal…, he let Pat Pirone score on a breakaway rebound from his knees and he gave up a shorthanded goal to Gino Tammaro…, the only Sandbagger to have a good game was Lee Nogler because he stayed home.

Penalty Debate

With the league using “Non-union Player Referees” to officiate the games…, of course calls are going to be missed and not properly penalized.  Let’s take Garvin Chan and his penalty call as an example.

Garvin was pressing down the boards when Pat Pirone stepped in front of him and basically mugged him because Pat knew he couldn’t keep up with Garvin’s speed (so he grabbed him).

Garvin (like all mugging victims) did what he’s supposed to do…, “keep the legs moving” but when he didn’t get the call for interference, he did what so many players do…, he hit the boards with his stick in frustration…, which resulted in a 5-minute misconduct.

Here’s the debate part:  Garvin barely hit the board (just enough to make a sound) but not enough to warrant a 5-minute misconduct.  It was more like a 1-minute unsportsmanlike (if you want to penalize Garvin’s stick work).

Over the last couple of years the league is really clamping down on stick slamming…, and unfortunately there has been no “gray area”…, the Referee’s cannot debate frustration levels or your intent and instead just call a 5-minute misconduct as mandated by the league.

But we would ask that they (the league) consider a 5-minute misconduct vs a 1-minute unsportsmanlike…, but that will never happen and here’s why;

Every time a stick infraction occurs you would have the Pat Pirone’s and Mike Luise’s and other “Non-A or C” player(s) of the league debating with the Referee as to the severity and intent of the stick slam…, and the league has zero time in the schedule to debate.

Moral of the story:  Just don’t slam your stick against the boards and you’ll stay out of the box for 5-minutes.

Top Shelf

It was a good start to last week’s Tealsters Union vs Black Magic matchup with Timmy “Tito” Burke putting the Tito’s Vodka up where it belongs… Top Shelf (aka top corner) with a blast over Scotty Rosato’s right shoulder.

“Tito’s” goal was just the appetizer for the real Tito’s Vodka spotlight as Ray Nickerson won the “Give back to the players” award last week.

Oh and one more thing “Tito”…, just because Ray won some free Tito’s Vodka, it doesn’t make you exempt from any future chops.

Walk of Shame

We’ve all been there and did the walk of shame…, in fact Bill Belichick (allegedly) got caught on a ring camera a few months ago doing it.

We don’t have ring video of Rob Sheridan’s walk of shame…, but we can tell you how it goes; Rob get’s a 1-minute “Delay of Game” penalty for firing the ball into the net and must sit in the Pat Pirone Suite for 60-seconds.

Upon exiting the sin bin and slowly walking towards his bench… Rob had to walk in front of his peers and fans seated in Hecklers Row and listen to Jay Carrien heckle Rob with “That’s it Rob…, take the walk of shame!!”

Rebounds

Last week was a week for rebounds…, no we are not talking about Ray Nickerson’s dating life (he’s doing just fine).  We’re talking about goals being scored off of a rebound.

As previously mentioned, Pat Pirone scored from his knees on his own rebound…, but Nick Romano upped the ante by scoring off his own missed shot.  Nick’s shot missed the net by a mile (hit the boards behind Dave Giusti) and the rebound came right back to Nick who used his patterned “No-Look Shot” to slap a backhander on Dave for a goal.

Then just 2:13 seconds later newbie Patrick Spencer (who’s a shoe in for some kind of season ending award)…, stuffed his own rebound in for the rarest of goals (and the second one of the day)…, the shorthanded goal.

First one to 20?

Since Mike Duggan is officially not going to score 30-goals or join the 20/20 Club.., there’s another race we can watch.  First one to 20 (wins!)

Mike currently has 17-goals and his nearest competitor is Pedro Fontes with 16-goals.

Rumor has it that Mike and his slim 1-goal lead is out this week and Pedro can take the lead with the help of Sean Roach.

Dominic DeFrancisco will definitely get to his 20-assists, but he’s light years away from 20-goals (with only 7) and even if Sean and his 4.00 GAA decided to give all (4) of those goals to Dominic this week and none for Pedro…, Dom would only jump to 11-goals with 2-games left.

So, with that said, the only race left to watch with the scoring leaders is who will be the first one to 20-goals.

Run it Up!

Black Magic who is currently running away with a 1st place finish and a potential 2023 Winter Season Championship are being frowned upon by their peers in the league as a team that likes to run the score up.

So like any good journalist that follows up on a lead or accusation we looked into the personal file and used the freedom of information act to discover the following:

Home Goals   Away Goals
Black Magic 5 Sandbaggers 0
Black Magic 2 Royal Family 1
Tealsters Union 1 Black Magic 4
White Lies 4 (OT) Black Magic 3
Marooned 1 Black Magic 3
Black Magic 4 Sandbaggers 2
Black Magic 7 Royal Family 4
Tealsters Union 1 Black Magic 3
White Lies 2 Black Magic 6
Marooned 2 Black Magic 4
Black Magic 2 Sandbaggers 4
Black Magic 5 Royal Family 1
Tealsters Union 2 Black Magic 7

After further review…, we ask you this; based on the above data is Black Magic guilty of running up the score?

Last week’s blowout win wasn’t a case of them running up the score it was a case of Steve Taddonio’s equipment showing up for the game, but were not sure if it was Steve wearing it or was Jeff Deharo playing back-to-back games for Steve wearing his equipment… as the week prior it was Jeff’s turn to get lit up by Black Magic.

We’ll give the accusations this:

Some players know when the game is at hand and already won and dump the ball into the corners (these are typically seasoned veterans) and other players want their $340 worth of points…, and then there’s those who are competing in a scoring race (so don’t blame them if your team and/or goalie is having a bad game) they have a mission to complete.

Good Luck!

We wanted to wish Alex Leone good luck with his season ending surgery.

Alex will be out for the remainder of this season but is slated to return for the 2024 Spring Season…, he’ll be returning as either Alex or Alexa if they screw up the surgery.

Good Luck Al…, see you for the Spring season.
